Springbrook Nature Center

I am proud to have authored a bill to help assist Springbrook Nature Center in a redevelopment that is sorely needed.

This legislation is part of the state's bonding bill this year. This money would be matched by fundraising to expand the interpretive building and provide enhancements such as indoor and outdoor classrooms, a small amphitheater, and a celebratory plaza for use by family groups. All of this would incorporate a green design, providing for environmentally friendly infrastructure, including solar and wind power, porous hardscapes, and recycled materials.

What a wonderful resource Springbrook is to our community. Tens of thousands of volunteer hours and many grants and donations have made Springbrook an oasis of nature right in the middle of suburbia. It offers classes such as environmental protection, hunter safety, and Scouting activities. It is a part of the science curriculum work for our school districts. Each summer, hundreds of children attend Springbrook Day Camps. As home to over 2,000 species of wildlife, Springbrook offers a peaceful place to experience nature for families or individuals.

Springbrook has become so popular, with the number of visitors rising sharply, that it is seeking the funds to develop in a way that both protects the natural environment and hosts over 150,000 visits a year. The goal is to focus the heaviest use of the park in the seven-acre frontage of the nature center's 127 acres.

These plans are exciting, and I am glad to be able to do my part in nurturing our natural resources such as those that make Springbrook Nature Center a special place for our families and community.
