Statement on Same-Day Registration Lawsuit

Today, a federal court judge dismissed a lawsuit attacking Minnesota’s same-day voter registration system. The lawsuit was brought forward by the Minnesota Voters Alliance and the Minnesota Freedom Council.

State Representative Ryan Winkler (DFL – Golden Valley) praised the judge’s decision and released the following statement:

“Minnesota has long been a leader in elections and voter turnout in part because of our same-day registration process. We’ve achieved this high turnout with little to no instances of voter fraud. A study from Citizens for Election Integrity found just 38 convictions for voter fraud in 2008, a year when nearly 3 million Minnesotans voted.

“Today, Judge Frank upheld our carefully crafted election system and preserved voting rights for more than 500,000 Minnesotans who use our same-day registration every election year.

“But the threats to same-day registration and our election system won’t simply disappear after this lawsuit. The groups pushing this lawsuit and the Photo ID constitutional amendment are organized and will never try to stop testing the system to try and restrict voting rights. Same-day registration survived today, but we can expect more and more lawsuits from right-wing groups in their effort to win elections by driving certain groups of voters away from the polls.”
