(ST. PAUL) — Last night, a conference committee reached an agreement on a bill that would drain a portion of the state’s budget reserves to make a one-time payment to partially pay back the $2.4 billion owed to school kids in Minnesota. Throughout this session, Democrats have offered an alternative that would close corporate loopholes that let businesses hide money overseas and used that money to fully pay back the IOU to Minnesota’s kids. Republicans rejected the DFL plan each and every time.
State Representative Ryan Winkler (DFL – Golden Valley) is the chief author of the “Pay Back Our Kids Act," which would close corporate loopholes to fully pay back the money owed to school kids.
Winkler released the following statement:
“Republicans are trying to deceive Minnesota's school kids. This payment is a drop in the bucket and merely a political ploy to cover their tracks. Democrats offered a solution to pay kids back but Republicans chose to stick up for corporations at the expense of our kids.
“Every kid on a playground knows that a bully who steals $25 and gives you $5 back is not your friend. Despite their political games, Republicans are no friends to Minnesota's school kids.”
