REPUBLICANS SHOW THEIR PRIORITIES LIE WITH BIG CORPORATIONS, NOT MINNESOTA KIDS

(ST. PAUL) — Today, the Minnesota House of Representatives passed HF 2083 (Garofalo), a bill that would drain Minnesota’s budget reserves to partially pay back the $2.4 billion owed to school kids in Minnesota. Democrats offered an amendment would have closed corporate loopholes that let businesses hide money overseas and used that money to fully pay back the IOU to Minnesota’s kids.

Republicans used a procedural maneuver to avoid voting on the DFL amendment.

State Representative Ryan Winkler (DFL – Golden Valley) is the chief author of the “Pay Back Our Kids Act," (HF 2480) which would close corporate loopholes to pay back kids.

Rep. Winkler released the following statement:

“It’s a simple choice: corporations or kids? Republicans have shown Minnesota where they stand. In 2011, the Republican majority chose corporate specials interests and the richest Minnesotans over Minnesota kids. They shut down the government to pass a budget that borrowed $2.4 billion from Minnesota kids and again today, the GOP has placed corporations above our children.

“The Republican crusade for corporations needs to end. It’s time for the Republicans to get their priorities in line and do the right thing. We need to close these corporate tax loopholes, so state funds go to kids in Brainerd and Grygla and not to companies hiding money in Bahrain and Grenada.”
