(ST. PAUL) — Today, House Republicans in the Education Finance voted to spend money in the budget reserve fund to partially pay back the $2.4 billion owed to school kids in Minnesota. In the same committee hearing, Republicans voted down an amendment to close corporate loopholes and fully pay back the money borrowed from schools.
State Representative Ryan Winkler (DFL – Golden Valley) is the chief author of the “Pay Back Our Kids Act," which would close corporate loopholes to pay back schools.
Winkler released the following statement:
“I welcome Rep. Garafolo and the Republicans’ newfound interest in paying back the IOU to our kids. Unfortunately, they have no plan to pay back the entire $2.4 billion, and this onetime payment is a drop in the bucket. If we are sincere about paying our kids back and aren’t interested in election year games, we will all support the ‘Pay Back Our Kids Act.’
“In 2011, the Republican majority chose corporate specials interests and the richest Minnesotans over Minnesota kids, and it is no surprise that they chose to do the same again today.
“It’s time to pay our kids back. It’s time to stop siding with corporations stashing their money in Granada and Bahrain, and side with kids going to school in Golden Valley and Brainerd.
