(ST. PAUL) — Today, state Representative Ryan Winkler (DFL – Golden Valley) joined Governor Mark Dayton, Secretary of State Mark Ritchie, and a group of legislators and local officials to announce support for a voter verification alternative to the controversial Republican-backed ID proposal. Their alternative is an electronic poll book that could identify voters.
The electronic poll book proposal is a byproduct of Governor Dayton’s bipartisan Election Integrity Task Force.
The Voter ID constitutional amendment was heard in the House Government Operations and Elections Committee this morning and the hearing will continue tonight.
Rep. Winkler released the following statement:
“Voter ID has serious unintended consequences for seniors, students, and other law-abiding citizens. Instead of creating barriers for citizens to choose their government, Republicans should sit with Governor Dayton and Democrats to work to improve Minnesota’s elections.
“The Voter ID constitutional amendment was heard in committee today with great controversy and protest. It’s time to turn the volume down and negotiate an alternative that works for Minnesota.
“Bipartisan election reform has been time-tested and works. Minnesota has the greatest election system in the country because we have worked together. We should do it again."
