SURPLUS MISSES THE POINT: MINNESOTA HAS A CLEAR VALUES DEFICIT

(ST. PAUL) — Today, Minnesota Management and Budget announced that the state has a $323 million surplus. Current law states that $5 million of the surplus must go to budget reserves with the rest beginning to pay back the $2.2 billion borrowed from Minnesota schools.

State Representative Ryan Winkler (DFL – Golden Valley) released the following statement on today’s announcement:

“Today’s announcement of a budget surplus misses the point. Not only does Minnesota face a deficit of $1.1 billion in the next biennium, our state's elected officials have a clear values deficit. Rather than close corporate tax loopholes or make the richest few pay their fair share, we borrowed $2.2 billion from our children and put $700 million on the tobacco credit card. Those aren’t Minnesota values.

“We haven’t come close to balancing our values deficit because we are borrowing from kids and maxing out the credit card in order to protect millionaires and corporate giveaways. It’s time for us to use new revenues to pay off old debt and close corporate tax loopholes to pay back our kids."
