REP. WINKLER PRAISES INCLUSION OF SOUTHWEST CORRIDOR LIGHT RAIL FUNDING IN BONDING BILL

(ST. PAUL) —Today, Governor Dayton unveiled his proposal for a $775 million bonding bill. The bill includes $25 million in funding for the Southwest Corridor Light Rail Transit line. The new line would be approximately 15 miles long and run from Minneapolis to Eden Prairie with a connection to the Central Corridor line.

State Representative Ryan Winkler (DFL – Golden Valley) praised the inclusion of the Southwest Corridor in the bonding bill.

“Construction of a Southwest Corridor Light Rail Transit line is good for business and good for our communities," said Rep. Winkler. “This transit line has broad support from the three largest Chambers of Commerce — Twin West, Minneapolis and St. Paul — and would connect people with jobs.

“Opponents of high-value transit projects are stuck in the past. Transit projects like the Southwest Corridor are essential to our future prosperity.”

Rep. Winkler also praised the proposed bonding money for an expansion of research facilities at the Hormel Institute in Austin. The new Research and Technology Center would provide new, state-of-the-art research labs and advance the cancer research partnership with the Mayo Clinic.

“We should continue to pursue projects that serve as long-term economic investments in transportation, research and education,” added Rep. Winkler. “Rather than focusing on constitutional amendments that will turn our state into Mississippi on social issues and California on fiscal issues, let’s get to work creating jobs and the infrastructure our state needs to be successful in the future.”
