Winkler responds to GOP anti-marriage equality efforts
State Rep. Ryan Winkler (DFL – Golden Valley) released this statement about GOP efforts to amend the Minnesota state constitution to ban marriage equality.
“Minnesota is a state where fairness and equality are traditional values. Wedging a ban on marriage equality into our state constitution is wrong – plain and simple.
Thousands of Minnesota families already face discrimination because they are headed by same sex couples. This constitutional amendment singles out these families for more unfair treatment. Marriage equality should be the law of the land.
On the first day of session GOP leaders said they would focus on jobs and the budget. They continue to refuse to take either seriously. The introduction of this divisive social issue raises the white flag, signaling to Minnesotans that Republicans are unable to lead us toward a fairly balanced budget.
Minnesotans deserve legislative leaders focused on creating jobs and balancing the state budget. That’s what it will take to reach a solution that fairly balances the budget without putting the whole burden on middle class families."
