Gov. Dayton offers clear choices, Republicans not facing reality

State Rep. Ryan Winkler (DFL – Golden Valley) released the following statement following Governor Mark Dayton’s State of the State address.

“It was refreshing to hear Governor Dayton speak openly and honestly about the challenges we face.

The simple choice before us is an all-cuts budget or a cuts plus revenue budget. The truth is if we pass an all cuts budget we cannot protect our investments in education, preserve the safety for children, elderly and the disabled, and support Minnesota’s preeminence in research and innovation.

While Governor Dayton has been upfront about our choices, Republicans have been unwilling to face reality. Their final Phase 1 budget bill cuts less than when it left the House and Senate floor. Already, it breaks their promise to protect elderly and disabled Minnesotans from budget pain. And they’re putting endangered children at the front of the line for the budget knife.

To distract us from their broken promises, we have seen a host of extreme initiatives that have nothing to do with our budget deficit including: various constitutional amendments, photo ID, gun permit changes, and eliminating equal pay for women. Most recently, Republicans introduced a bill making it lawful to charge 10 year old children with crimes as adults.

Before we start prosecuting 10 year olds as adults, let’s get real, get responsible, and get our work done."
