ST. PAUL, MN – The House Rules Committee defeated an effort this afternoon to put the budget first this session. A rules amendment offered weeks ago by Minority Leader Paul Thissen was struck down by Republicans. The amendment would have barred the consideration of constitutional amendments until a final budget agreement was passed and signed into law.
State Rep. Ryan Winkler (DFL – Golden Valley) had this to say about the priorities of the new Republican Majority.
"Just three weeks into the legislative session, the new Republican Majority has proposed legislation to increase the budget deficit by creating new corporate subsidies, to eliminate thousands of public sector jobs, and to raise regressive property taxes.
"Republicans have introduced constitutional amendments to create new gun rights, and eliminate labor unions. They are considering bills to make English the official language and block reproductive choice.
"Meanwhile, the state is $6.2 billion in deficit and 206,000 Minnesotans are out of work. Today they gave themselves a free pass to push those issues aside and focus instead on their real priorities: divisive social issues and political posturing.
Eventually, Republicans will realize the severity of our fiscal and economic situation. Hopefully they will be ready to take constructive action before July and a state government shutdown."
