REPUBLICANS HAVE NO LEGAL GROUND TO CHALLENGE HEALTH CARE

ST. PAUL, MN – Today Republican state legislators called on Attorney General Lori Swanson to file suit against the federal government in response to historic health insurance reform passed by Congress this weekend. State Rep. Ryan Winkler (DFL – Golden Valley) had this to say in response.

-------------------------------

“It’s official. Tea Party paranoia has taken over the Republican Party. With no constitutional basis for their claims, right-wing extremists have asked the Attorney General to pursue a frivolous lawsuit.

“The US Constitution gives Congress all powers that are ‘necessary and proper’ to regulate interstate commerce. Unless someone is claiming Social Security and Medicare are unconstitutional federal programs, there is absolutely no basis for this lawsuit.

“Along with their silly claims that our President isn’t a US citizen, Tea Party extremists are now making absurd claims that the federal government isn’t allowed to regulate insurance companies or extend health insurance to uninsured Americans.

“The die-hard defenders of inequality are using the same old ‘states’ rights’ myths to undermine the most significant social progress we’ve seen since the civil rights era."
