This news should come as no surprise to Minnesotans. It is just another piece of the pattern of mismanagement by Tim Pawlenty. Millions in taxpayer dollars have disappeared from state agencies through waste, fraud and abuse, every internal auditor at the Department of Finance has been eliminated, and now Governor Pawlenty doesn't even realize that his agencies have ignored his order for a state hiring freeze.
Governor Palwenty continues to lecture Minnesotans that government needs to tighten its belt while Pawlenty’s bureaucratic waistline keeps getting bigger. Minnesotans may be surprised to hear that facing a $6.4 billion budget shortfall Governor Pawlenty has failed to impose any meaningful limit on spending by his agencies. Governor Pawlenty proposes to ravage schools, hospitals, nursing homes, and the disabled with budget cuts, but keeps spending more and more on his own pet projects.
It's time for every Minnesotan, and the press, to ask Governor Pawlenty three important questions:
1. How much time does the governor actually spend managing the business of the state?
2. How well does the governor oversee his agencies and commissioners?
3. How serious is Tim Pawlenty about being Minnesota’s governor?
A $6.4 billion deficit. A quarter of a million Minnesotans unemployed. One thousand more losing their jobs every week. Our hospitals and nursing homes are faced with the prospect of closing their doors. Now, more than ever, Minnesota needs a focused and responsible governor committed to the well-being and long-term future of our state. But based on the actions and chronic mismanagement of this administration, Minnesotans should know they don't have one.
