I35W SURVIVORS TO TESTIFY ABOUT EFFECTIVENESS OF RELIEF FUND

ST. PAUL, MN - This week marked the last day (April 14) survivors of the I35W Bridge collapse and their families can claim a settlement from an I35W Survivor Compensation Fund passed by the Minnesota Legislature last year. All 179 survivors have had their claims processed and approved by the panel, and all have accepted settlements provided by the $36 million Fund.

“Working with survivors and their attorneys, the panel has done an outstanding job ensuring the Fund worked as was intended to help the people affected by this unprecedented tragedy," said Rep. Winkler. “We owe a great deal of gratitude to the panel members, and everyone who worked over the past year to help put survivors back on their feet after a horrific tragedy.”

Rep. Winkler and others are working to understand how the Fund and its settlement mechanisms were successful, and measure areas where improvement are needed should a similar effort be needed for a future tragedy. Survivors of the I35W Bridge collapse will testify before the State Government Finance Committee next week to discuss how the I35W Survivor Compensation Fund passed by the legislature last year is working. The hearing will take place Tuesday, April 21 at 9:00am. A location has not yet been confirmed.
