YOUR INPUT WILL HELP GUIDE OUR DECISIONS
To the Editor:
Over the last several weeks, Democrats and Republicans in the House and Senate traveled around the state to gather input from Minnesotans about the state’s multi-billion dollar shortfall. More than 6500 people attended dozens of hearings in all corners of Minnesota. During those meetings lawmakers heard testimony from 1,500 Minnesotans.
Last Thursday in Plymouth, over 200 people showed up in the middle of a blizzard to weigh in on the conversation. I want to thank those who attended the hearing. We heard your voices, and you made your priorities clear: protect our students and most vulnerable, and balance the budget fairly with responsible solutions.
State economist Stinson released a revised budget forecast this week. Stinson’s estimates show the deficit has grown to $7 billion. With Minnesota’s unemployment rate at 7.6%, many difficult decisions lie ahead. Now with your input and a clear picture of the difficult situation we face, lawmakers can begin the task of resolving this deficit in a fair and responsible manner.
