To the Editor:
Minnesota is facing a record budget shortfall of $4.8 billion brought on by the recent economic downturn. Finding a responsible resolution to this unprecedented and growing multi-billion budget shortfall will be difficult.
As required by the constitution, Governor Pawlenty began that process by releasing his budget proposal earlier this month. The details of the governor’s plan indicate just how difficult it will be to fill the gap. Governor Pawlenty’s plan would borrow money from future taxpayers to make interest payments, eliminate health care coverage for 113,000 adults and 20,000 children, cut programs for the elderly and disabled, and shift money out of public education.
The Minnesota Legislature is now at work thoroughly examining the governor’s budget-balancing plan, looking for areas of agreement, disagreement, and compromise. Lawmakers can’t do this work alone; we need your help.
For that reason, the Minnesota Legislature is going on the road to discuss budget solutions with citizens in every corner of the state. A bicameral, bipartisan committee will be coming to Plymouth on Thursday, February 26, to hold a public hearing on the budget. The hearing will begin at 7:00pm at Plymouth City Hall. All residents of St. Louis Park, Hopkins, and Golden Valley are encouraged to attend and participate.
We need your input and thoughtful questions to balance the budget responsibly. All Minnesotans have a stake in the outcome of this legislative session, and we all need to work together to get it done right. We look forward to hearing from you.
