REP. RYAN WINKLER WORKS WITH GOVERNOR TO MAKE MORE EFFICIENT USE OF K-12 FUNDING

ST. PAUL, MN - State Rep. Ryan Winkler (DFL - Golden Valley) joined efforts with a bipartisan group of lawmakers and Governor Tim Pawlenty today in introducing a new proposal that would provide significant savings for Minnesota schools. This new reform measure would shrink administrative costs in K-12 school districts statewide by allowing school districts to pool their purchasing power to utilize limited education resources more efficiently.

“Minnesota school districts can save significant dollars by sharing the cost of basic services like information technology, transportation, food service, administrative personnel, and the like," said Rep. Winkler. “Every penny schools save finding new and efficient ways to allocate limited sources of funding is more that can be spent in the classroom on students.”

Facing a record $4.8 billion budget deficit, state lawmakers are taking a new approach to responsibly restructure state government this session. Focused on increasing the value of every taxpayer dollar, legislators are examining the state budget line by line to ensure state government provides quality services to all its citizens at a lower cost. The education reform measure introduced today is a clear example that lawmakers are taking that task very seriously.

“We have to set clear priorities to ensure state government continues providing quality services,” said Winkler. “Nowhere in the budget is that more important than the education of our students.

“Minnesota has long had a nation-leading school system,” Winkler continued. “Still, we must be willing to re-imagine and improve how we deliver education for students. Our state and its students need the best education possible; to make that happen we need to ensure every available resource is spent in the classroom.”

The bipartisan, bicameral coalition supporting this initiative will now begin working to usher these reform measures through the legislative process.

“We are determined to prevent Minnesota students from bearing the brunt of this budget deficit,” said Rep. Winkler. “We will continue examining every nook and cranny of the state budget to give Minnesota students continued access to a world-class education.”
