From the first days after the I35W Bridge collapse, some of the state’s most effective legal advocates offered their help free of charge. Their professional service helped survivors wade through months of daunting paperwork and legal proceedings to ensure every victim met the October 15 deadline to file claims with the state.
I think I speak for all Minnesotans in thanking those attorneys who stepped forward to lend a helping hand. Their exceptional pro bono work filled one of our state’s most pressing legal needs at a time when Minnesotans needed them most.
We also owe our gratitude to the Special Masters Panel whose work has just begun. Former Chief Justice Anderson selected very able and experienced lawyers to serve on the Panel. The Panel faces challenging work in the months to come, but I am confident they have the judgment and fairness necessary to craft the best possible compensation packages for the survivors.
The Special Masters Panel is charting new ground with the I35W Survivor Compensation Fund. It is the first of its kind in the country, and will require the Panel to deliver justice in the innovative, responsible manner Minnesotans expect from state government. We can trust they will carry out this important work with great care.
