HOUSE ACTS ON SURVIVOR COMPENSATION FUND LEGISLATION

ST. PAUL – Lawmakers acted quickly today on Survivor Compensation Fund legislation authored by Rep. Ryan Winkler (DFL – Golden Valley/St. Louis Park). The bill passed out of the House Government Operations Committee on a voice vote.

"Survivors of the I35W Bridge collapse can feel comfort because the Legislature is being responsive in moving this bill forward quickly," stated Rep. Winkler.

Winkler's bill seeks to compensate victims for the losses inflicted on them as a result of the I35W Bridge collapse. Survivors of the bridge collapse were on-hand at the hearing – many of whom are actively advocating for the passage of a bridge fund.

"Of course there's nothing the state of Minnesota can do to restore the damage suffered by those Minnesotans who were on the bridge," Winkler said. "But the least we can do is move quickly to minimize the financial burdens they are facing as a result."

Winkler's proposal will now be referred to the House Public Safety and Civil Justice Committee for a hearing on February 18.
