To the Editor:
Under new Democratic leadership in the House, and with over two-dozen new members, we worked hard to provide results for the people of Minnesota this session. And for the first time in eight years, the Legislature finished its budget work on time, without resorting to a special session.
Ultimately, we made good progress on important issues. We stabilized school funding and began to reform how we evaluate students and schools. We provided healthcare to 37,000 more Minnesota kids, and began to reform healthcare to control costs and improve quality. We also passed historic, nation-leading energy legislation, essential environmental legislation, made pursuing a higher education more affordable, and more.
I am, however, disappointed that our transportation and property tax relief packages did not become law this year. Although the Democratic-controlled Legislature was committed to a spirit of compromise with the Governor and Republican colleagues on these issues, unfortunately that good faith and cooperative effort was not always reciprocated. We made some progress, but still have much work to do.
I remain committed to more innovative government that is accountable and delivers results for taxpayer dollars. In doing so, we can create a more efficient government that will get Minnesota moving back on the path of high quality-of-life and economic opportunity.
The Legislature has adjourned until February 12, 2008 and I am now returning to my work in the high-tech industry. Please feel free to call (651-296-7026) or email (rep.ryan.winkler@house.mn) throughout the interim if you have any questions or concerns on any topic. As always, I look forward to hearing from you.

State Representative
