To the Editor:
Group homes serve an important purpose in the lives of many who are unable to care for themselves. The disabled, senior citizens, and others often rely on the services, shelter, and care provided in a group home for survival.
The presence of group homes in our community has helped many of our citizens lead a normal and healthy life. However, in recent years our area has seen a steady increase of group home locations throughout our residential neighborhoods. This concerns some homeowners for a number of reasons – particularly when there is a high concentration of group homes located in certain neighborhoods.
We have heard steadily from constituents in the St. Louis Park and Golden Valley communities about concerns that high concentrations of group homes in their neighborhoods is detrimental to property values, public safety, and quality of life.
These citizens' concerns are understandable. At the same time, it is important to ensure that the services provided by group homes in our community remains available to the citizens who need it.
For that reason, we introduced legislation in the House (HF2324) and Senate (SF2125) last week to establish new regulations requiring group homes to be at least 1300 feet apart. This would address the concerns of homeowners about high concentrations of group homes in neighborhoods while allowing group homes to continue providing their services to the disabled, senior citizens, and others.
We encourage you to contact us with any questions, comments, or suggestions about this or any other issue.
