REP. RYAN WINKLER URGES CONSTITUENTS TO SHARE IDEAS FOR PROPERTY TAX RELIEF

ST. PAUL – To address rising property taxes, this week the Minnesota Legislature created a 1-800 comment line and website for taxpayers to give their representatives ideas for reducing property taxes. State Representative Ryan Winkler is urging his constituents to share their stories about how they've dealt with rising property taxes by calling this comment line or visiting the website.

"Property taxes have gone up by nearly $1.5 billion over the last four years," said Winkler. "There isn't a one-size fits all solution to this problem. As legislators we need to have the input of our constituents to find good solutions that will provide meaningful property tax relief for St. Louis Park and Golden Valley, as well as the rest of Minnesota."

Residents can offer their input in two ways. They can call Minnesota's Property Tax Comment line at 1-800-551-5520 or log onto Minnesota's Property Tax Comment website at www.house.mn/dfl/ptax/propertytaxproject.html. Both the hotline and website are up and running to take comments and ideas.

Property tax relief may already be available to residents right now by applying for a refund. Every year, thousands of Minnesotans who are eligible for a property tax refund don't take advantage of it.

"As a legislator, I am committed to ensuring that all of the people in my district who deserve refunds for their property taxes receive them," said Winkler.

To apply for the refund, residents should complete form M1PR. The form is available at public libraries and at other locations where state tax forms are distributed. It can also be found at the Minnesota Department of Revenue website at: www.taxes.state.mn.us/taxes/forms/m1pr_print.pdf. The Department of Revenue asks that all taxpayers fill out the 2006 form M1PR claims by August 15, 2007. Taxpayers who file 2006 claims after August 15, 2008 will not receive a refund.
