ENCOURAGING NEWS FROM GOVERNOR PAWLENTY FOR GOVERNMENT ACCOUNTABILITY

To the Editor:

When Governor Pawlenty delivered his State of the State address on January 17, I was pleased to hear that he and I share the same goal of making government more innovative and accountable in its mission. His message on Wednesday about getting the most value for our tax dollars in Minnesota further solidified my high hopes for achieving positive and lasting progress for our state this session.

The Governor's work with the legislature thus far has demonstrated the potential to achieve good solutions to the many fundamental challenges our state is currently facing. We could not have passed the Federal Conformity bill with unanimous support within the first weeks of session without his cooperation. In doing so, we were able to grant tax relief to college students, military personnel deployed in combat zones, and classroom expenditures for teachers.

But there is more work to be done on a policy agenda to deliver on the Governor's message, and many times during his speech I heard unfair attacks on schools and public servants working hard to deliver results. If the Governor will work together with us in the legislature to bring real reform, we will deliver on the promise he outlined.

I encourage you to share your own ideas, concerns, and suggestions with me regarding any issue concerning this community or our state. Please contact me at (651) 296-7026 or by email at rep.ryan.winkler@house.mn.
