Rep. John Benson: Southwest Light Rail Transit Good For Businesses, Communities, and Our Future

(ST. PAUL) — Today, Governor Dayton announced the projects that will receive a portion of the $47.5 million in DEED bonding funding. This bonding money was delegated to the executive branch by the legislature in the 2012 bonding bill. The Southwest Corridor Light Rail Transit project was awarded $2 million.

State Representative John Benson (DFL – Minnetonka) released the following statement:

“This is great news and I want to thank Governor Dayton for ensuring that this important project receives funding. I’ve long been a supporter of the Southwest Light Rail Transit Project, and support the position of the TwinWest, Minneapolis, and St. Paul Chambers of Commerce, and our local officials and businesses on this issue.

“The Southwest Light Rail Transit project is a great investment in the future of our communities. Our area is growing rapidly and we’re projected to add another 60,000 jobs by 2030. Our roads can’t handle that, and local businesses — and businesses considering coming to the Twin Cities — want transit. Any state investment will leverage funds at a ratio of 9 to 1 in federal and county dollars.

“Now is the time to continue moving forward on this project and I hope my colleagues on both sides of the aisle will make improving and expanding our transit system a higher priority.”
