Dear neighbors,
The legislative session is just over a month old and the big news of last week was the release of the redistricting maps last Tuesday. The judicial panel redistricting maps are posted at the following website: http://www.gis.leg.mn/html/redistricting.html. I think the judicial panel did a fair and honest job drawing the new district lines, and they should be commended for their work.
As I’ve stated before, I support and I am co-authoring legislative reforms which would establish a non partisan redistricting commission and a non partisan compensation commission. Legislators should NOT be able to draw the lines of their own legislative districts nor should they be setting their own pay.
The new maps certainly made for a lot of press, but job creation and strengthening our economic recovery ought to remain our top priorities. We need to remain focused on the job at hand.
As the legislative session has continued, seemingly little attention has been given to job creation. Governor Dayton has introduced a comprehensive plan to get Minnesotans back to work and to strengthen our economic recovery, but so far, he has received little cooperation and support in his efforts from the Republican majority.
Finally, I’ve co-authored legislation which would restore the homestead property credit. I will continue to oppose further cuts to the renters’ credit. Let’s pay back the over $3 billion the legislature “borrowed" from our children’s schools before we consider either more spending or more unpaid-for special interest tax cuts.
As session continues to move along, I welcome your input and advice on these or any other legislative issues important to you. Thank you again for the honor of serving you in the legislature.
Sincerely,
John Benson
State Representative
