STATEMENT ON FEBRUARY BUDGET FORECAST

(ST. PAUL) — The Minnesota Management and Budget Office today released their February forecast, reducing the state’s projected budget deficit from $6.2 billion to slightly over $5 billion.

Rep. John Benson (DFL – Minnetonka) released the following statement on the budget forecast:

“I am pleased to see the reduction in our projected budget deficit, brought on by a still slowly recovering economy. The projected deficit however, is still $5 billion and leaves us with some very difficult choices in balancing our budget. Governor Dayton wisely revised his budget, removing painful cuts to nursing homes, MinnesotaCare, mass transit and eliminating the 3 percent surcharge on incomes over $500,000.

“Now that the February forecast has been released and Governor Dayton has updated his budget proposal, I’m waiting to read the Republicans’ all-cuts budget proposal. They have promised repeatedly that they could balance the budget through only cuts and reform, while protecting the vulnerable and holding K-12 education funding at its current levels. Voters and legislators deserve an opportunity to compare the two budget proposals and I won’t make a decision until I’ve been able to do so. I eagerly await their budget plan and a discussion on the future direction of our great state."
