To the editor:
On Tuesday, February 15, Governor Dayton released his budget proposal: his attempt to erase our state’s $6.2 billion budget deficit. The governor kept the promises he made all throughout his campaign to raise taxes on the highest income earners in the state and increase funding for education, especially for optional all-day kindergarten.
Now that Governor Dayton has published his budget, I’m waiting to read the Republicans’ all-cuts budget proposal. They promised throughout their campaigns that they could balance the budget through only cuts and reform, while protecting the vulnerable and holding K-12 education funding at its current levels. Legislators and voters deserve an opportunity to compare the two budget proposals and I won’t make a decision until I’ve been able to do so. I eagerly await their budget plan and a discussion on the future direction of our great state.
Now this is not the budget proposal that will be passed through the legislature and the governor himself acknowledged that fact. But it opens up a broader discussion of what we value as Minnesotans, what services we expect our government to provide, and how we pay for them. While I have several concerns about the governor’s budget, it’s a first step, and must make its way through the legislative process.
On the budget and other issues at the legislature, I’d like your input. You can reach me at (651) 296-9934 or at rep.john.benson@house.mn. You can also send mail to my office, 289 State Office Building, 100 Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., St. Paul, Minnesota 55155.
