LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Balancing the Budget, Leading Towards Economic Recovery

To the Editor,

My Republican colleagues and I took leadership of the Minnesota Legislature with the commitment to positive solutions for job growth and bringing responsibility back to government. We took another step this week by announcing our plan for a balanced budget that protects priorities, reduces unsustainable spending and doesn’t raise taxes.

I’ve talked before about the importance of making government live within its means. Our most recent budget forecast showed revenue increases of 8.8 percent under existing tax levels. This growth, especially when combined with our improved economic outlook, is more than enough to fund priorities and deliver the core services our citizens rely upon. And by ensuring a competitive tax environment, our families and businesses can continue to put Minnesota on track for economic recovery and job growth.

Within existing revenues, our budget focuses on priorities and drives performance. We reduce projected government spending by 13 percent and restructure the bureaucracy while maintaining public safety and classroom funding. We also push innovative reforms to move government into the 21st century. Our initiatives reduce waste and fraud, eliminate duplicative programs and spending, and streamline and consolidate government structures for cost-efficiency and improved service delivery.

My legislative colleagues and I are committed to putting a stop to unsustainable government spending and promoting job growth in the private sector. While the challenges are many, it is also an opportunity to change the way government does business and transform Minnesota for a stronger economic future. As the legislative session continues, I encourage you to contact me with your questions and thoughts on all legislative issues. I appreciate hearing from my constituents, and I know that together we can bring job growth back to Minnesota, responsibility back to government and create the better future we all deserve.

Sincerely,

Sarah Anderson
