Reps. Sarah Anderson and Mary Murphy Respond to Call for Redistricting Commission

ST. PAUL—State Representative Sarah Anderson (R – Plymouth), Chair of the House Redistricting Committee, responded to a call for an independent redistricting commission outside of the Legislature.

“The state constitution places this responsibility with the Legislature,” said Anderson. “We are committed to a fair, open, and honest redistricting process that reflects the demographic changes across Minnesota over the past 10 years while allowing communities of interest the best opportunity to be represented,” said Anderson.

The Redistricting Committee has traveled to regional centers around the state including Marshall, Hermantown and Rochester to gather public input and better understand population shifts across Minnesota.

“Representative Anderson and I agree that the Legislature can produce a fair, representative plan and map for the entire state,” said Rep. Mary Murphy (DFL – Hermantown), who serves as the DFL lead on the Redistricting Committee. “We are gathering information and public input, and reaching out to communities of interest across the state.”

“The legislature is an elected body and we are accountable to the people of Minnesota. A commission is not,” said Anderson. “We are committed to an open, fair redistricting process for all Minnesotans.”
