LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Welcome to the 2011 Session

The Legislature convened for the 2011 session last week with a clear message from Minnesota voters and a new majority committed to their priorities. Faced with economic and budget challenges, we are committed to positive solutions that bring job growth back to our communities and responsibility back to government.

With the economy in a slow but fragile recovery, the Legislature must focus on pro-growth initiatives to improve our business climate. Reforming the regulatory process and removing barriers to job creation will increase our state’s economic competitiveness and promote job growth in the private sector. With an open door to opportunity, the hardworking people of our area and all of Minnesota will put us back on track for recovery and growth.

Another priority of mine, and our community, is education. In these challenging budgetary times, it is critical to protect priorities like education, but also to make sure we are maximizing the use of our financial and human resources. Reducing administrative and bureaucratic costs, relieving local schools of expensive mandates and rewarding good teachers are just a few ways to make our education dollars go farther. I will again work for the meaningful reforms that empower our next generation to compete and succeed in the 21st century economy.

Finally, there is the issue of the budget. Facing a $6.2 billion deficit, it’s time to innovate and develop solutions for long-term fiscal stability. Like you, I understand the importance of setting a budget, setting priorities and living within our means. From redesigning the structure of government to streamlining services, there is much we can do to reduce costs and still provide the critical services citizens rely on. Our state can no longer afford the status quo, and our people deserve better. I am committed to the challenging but rewarding work of balancing the budget today and reforming government for the future.

Before closing, I want to extend an invitation for all constituents to attend my Listening Session, to be held on January 26 from 6:30-8:00pm at Plymouth City Hall. It is an honor to represent the people of Plymouth and Medicine Lake in the Minnesota House of Representatives, and I look forward to hearing from you. My door is always open to the people and priorities of our community. Together, we can bring job growth back to Minnesota, responsibility back to government and create the better future we all deserve.

Sincerely,

Sarah Anderson
