ST PAUL – Rep. Sarah Anderson [R-Plymouth & Medicine Lake] has introduced legislation that would require student approval of optional fees at Minnesota colleges and universities. The bill, House File 1252, was introduced on March 2 and is awaiting a hearing in the Higher Education and Workforce Development Finance and Policy Division. Student approval would not be needed for fees directly relating to educational or health services or to specific fees that students can elect not to pay.
“The cost of a college education is increasing faster than what most students can afford,” said Rep. Anderson. “And while student life activities can be an important part of a campus experience for some, for others it is a luxury that has little to do with their education. Giving students the option to reject fee increases for activities that aren’t necessary to attaining their degree is a measure that many students would appreciate.”
