Several bills are already moving through the Minnesota House this session. Two of them stem from the 35W bridge collapse and the floods in southeast Minnesota.
The 35W victims’ relief fund created in House File 2553 would provide compensation to people injured during the bridge collapse. It also sets up a system for compensation if a similar event would occur in the future. As part of accepting compensation from the state, recipients would agree to not pursue lawsuits toward public entities. This is similar to the idea behind the 9-11 survivors’ fund.
The southeast Minnesota floods just a few weeks after the bridge collapse led many of us to recognize that we need a better system for state agencies to respond to citizens’ needs when a disaster takes place. House File 2904 would put that framework in place to guide the state through relief efforts. It would also ensure we don’t provide state relief aid to a situation already covered by other sources of aid.
