To the Editor,
Balancing the budget is the biggest issue on our legislative agenda in 2008. The stalled housing market and loss of manufacturing jobs hit our state especially hard and left job creators uncertain about the direction of our economy. Balancing the budget means we need to tighten our belts and look for innovative ways to reinvigorate our economy.
Next to the budget, rising health care costs are at the forefront of our concerns. Two bipartisan groups of legislators and health care experts spent the last several months studying ways to lower costs and both laid out recommendations on how to do so.
As we consider these recommendations, I believe we need to first ensure that you have the ability to see the doctor of your choice and be in control of your health care. We also need to take advantage of advances in technology to help you as a consumer make prudent health care choices. Lastly, we should enact tax benefits that help people in covering their health care costs.
In addition to jobs and health care, there is a call for education funding reform. The current system of financing punishes students based on where they live. It is time for a change that gives students the same quality learning opportunities no matter where they live.
We can achieve our goals this year in a way that benefits all Minnesotans. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to make this happen. I will keep you informed on the bills that pass and the issues we debate, and I encourage you to contact me with your thoughts.
Sincerely,
Sarah Anderson
