Friends,
The first week of the 2008 legislative session saw the passage of one major bill that will affect all of you who go to the polls in November. Known as simply “the dedicated funding bill” it will put a constitutional amendment before voters to raise the sales tax and dedicate the proceeds to arts, environment and culture funding. The sales tax increase would be half of one percent.
The other significant news from the first week was Governor Pawlenty’s state of the state address. The governor outlined his legislative agenda, which includes reforms in teacher training, a broad veterans benefits package and health care reform that protects the doctor-patient relationship and lowers costs. But the strongest message from his speech was that now is not the time to raise taxes. The economy is slow, the budget is in deficit and rising prices for everyday goods are squeezing our wallets. The governor made it clear that during this session he will not allow government to add to the pressure.
As the session begins, I want to thank you for the opportunity to serve on behalf of our communities. I will keep you informed on the bills that pass and the issues we debate, but I also encourage you to contact me with your thoughts.
Thank you for your time and, again, thank you for the honor of representing you.
