LETTER TO THE EDITOR

2007 Constituent Survey Results

To the editor,

Earlier this session I set out on an effort to take the pulse of my district and get its opinions about the issues we’re talking about in the Legislature. The responses I received have been extremely helpful to me. I want to thank everyone who took the time to respond and share some of the results with readers.

Tax relief emerged as the number one priority for respondents, beating out all other issues by 10 percentage points. Specifically regarding property tax relief, residents chose limiting the amount local governments can raise property taxes as their preferred way to control future increases. That said, I was surprised by the number of people who chose increasing Local Government Aid (LGA) to cities as a property tax relief proposal, especially since Plymouth does not receive LGA and therefore increased LGA won’t deliver property tax relief to Plymouth residents.

On other issues, 69 percent of respondents believed schools should be required to direct 70 percent of their budget to the classroom. They also believed college students should be guaranteed a flat tuition rate for their first four years of college – an initiative I have authored.

Regarding health care, 84 percent of residents are opposed to a government-run health care system. Consequently, the approach to health care I have taken includes allowing for more competition in the health insurance sector and putting the power of health care decisions in the hands of patients and their doctors.

Lastly, on the issue of transportation funding options, respondents preferred using a combination of the $2.2 billion surplus monies, bonding, and general fund dollars by 65 percent.

To say these comments are helpful to me would be an understatement. In addition to survey responses, I have received countless emails and phone calls on every issue the Legislature examines. I again thank everyone who takes the time to share his or her opinion, and encourage them to continue doing so.

Sincerely,

Sarah Anderson
