LOCAL LAWMAKERS EXPRESS CONCERN OVER NWA MERGER

Local lawmakers, Shelley Madore, Sandra Masin, and Will Morgan, are expressing major concerns over this week's announcement of a major Northwest/Delta business merger. The deal would eliminate at least one thousand jobs at Northwest's Eagan headquarters; jobs averaging $70,000 per year.

"Northwest Airlines is a huge economic asset to our communities," said Rep. Shelley Madore (DFL - Burnsville/Apple Valley). "For decades, Northwest has provided good-paying jobs for thousands of south metro residents. This merger is of major concern to people in our area - it's an issue we are all taking very seriously."

A legislative hearing of the House Commerce and Labor Committee is scheduled for next Friday, April 25, to closely examine the airlines' merger plans and its impact on surrounding communities. The hearing will take place at 10:00 am in Room 5 of the State Office Building. Airline management, union officials, and airline experts are expected to testify. Madore, Masin, and Morgan will be participating in the hearing, representing the interests of their communities.

"We're going over this thing with a fine toothed comb," said Rep. Sandra Masin (DFL - Burnsville/Eagan). "Our main concern is that good-paying jobs are leaving the community. In the interest of our local economy, we need to review this situation thoroughly."

By moving much of the company to Georgia, the local economy is expected to take a serious blow - to the tune of an estimated $300 million.

"There's going to be some turbulence in our local economy if this deal goes through," said Rep. Will Morgan (DFL - Burnsville/Savage). "We are going to do everything possible to minimize the impact of the merger on the people in our communities, and move our local economy forward from a position of strength and confidence."
