The Minnesota House passed a bill today to create Minnesota's first Ultra High-Speed Broadband Task Force. Authored by State Representative Sandra Masin (DFL-Eagan), the task force will develop broadband deployment goals for Minnesota and strategies to achieve those goals.
"Minnesota's ability to compete in the global marketplace depends on an effective, affordable and accessible technology infrastructure," said Masin. "This task force will help us determine what the state needs to provide in terms of additional resources to create that infrastructure and to position us as a leader in economic and business development for the 21st century."
House File2107/Senate File 1918 creates a task force made up of members appointed by the governor and the legislature, and charged with developing recommendations by November 1, 2009 that:
· Identifies a level of broadband service and connection speeds that will be reasonably needed by the year 2015;
· Describes policies and actions and cost estimates to meet the goals;
· Identifies areas in the state that lack necessary infrastructure to support broadband service;
· Evaluates strategies and financing mechanisms in other area to support comprehensive broadband deployment.
"Technology continues to change and improve the efficiency of businesses large and small, "said Masin. "And at home it's changed the way we manage everything from personal finances to the way we apply for jobs and register for school. This task force is a good step towards making sure every part of the state has an equal opportunity to take advantage of new technology."
Having passed the Senate earlier in the 2008 Legislative Session, the bill now goes to Governor Pawlenty who is expected to sign it into law.
