House Telecommunications Regulation and Infrastructure Committee to Hold Broadband Hearing in Eagan

A legislative committee charged with technology oversight and regulation will be holding a hearing in Eagan to hear from residents and local businesses about economic development and technology needs, and if the state has a role to play in helping to meet those needs.
"Technology continues to change and improve the efficiency of businesses large and small, and at home, it's changed everything from the way people manage personal finance to the way they apply for jobs and register for school," said State Representative Sandy Masin, (DFL-Eagan) and Vice-Chair of the House Telecommunications Regulation and Infrastructure Finance Division. "We'd like to hear directly from businesses and individuals about some of their specific technology needs and if they have effective access to technology – particularly broadband. We'd also like their insight into what the state's role might be to assist them in this area, and what that assistance might look like."
The hearing will take place at Eagan City Hall on Wednesday, October 17 at 4:00PM. Committee members will hear testimony on a broad range of concerns ranging from existing levels of service and customer choice, provider competition, current consumer protection measures and liability and privacy issues.
During the 2007 Legislative Session, Rep. Masin introduced legislation to make ultra-high speed transmission data services available to all Minnesotans by 2015.
"Minnesota's ability to compete in the global marketplace will depend on having an effective, affordable and accessible technology infrastructure," said Masin. "We need to determine whether or not the state needs to provide additional assistance to create that infrastructure so we can best position ourselves as a leader in economic and business development for the 21st century."
