NATIONAL NIGHT OUT STRENGTHENS NEIGHBORHOOD CONNECTIONS

To the Editor,
As a long-time Eagan resident, parent, volunteer and now State Representative, I'm proud of our community. Residents of Eagan and Burnsville are fortunate to enjoy an extraordinary quality of life with great schools, a thriving business community and above all, safe neighborhoods with a real sense of connection to the community.
Ensuring the public safety of our citizens is a primary responsibility of state government. The Public Safety bill passed by the legislature this year was the largest in Minnesota history, providing over $2 billion in funding for Minnesota's law enforcement, prison and court systems and includes critical public safety policy provisions to reduce crime and promote safe communities.
On Tuesday, August 7, Eagan and Burnsville will join cities across Minnesota and the nation for National Night Out, an event that promotes public safety awareness and generates support for anti-crime programs within communities. Along with the traditional displays of outdoor lights and front porch vigils, National Night Out is celebrated with community-building activities such as block parties, cookouts, police and fire department visits, contests, and youth programs.

National Night Out strengthens neighborhood networks and fosters police and community relationships. Together with effective state and local government, and the vigilance of engaged citizens, we send a strong message that criminal activity will not be tolerated. Just as important, we strengthen our commitment to make our communities great places to live, work and raise a family.
