MASIN FORCES NORTHWEST TO PAY FOR UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS

ST. PAUL - State Representative Sandra Masin of Eagan successfully amended a larger employment bill to require Northwest Airlines to pay for a 26-week extension of unemployment benefits for locked out mechanics.

"When Northwest was in bankruptcy, I think we all understood that it was up to the rest of us to make sure these mechanics had the time to get the training they needed for new jobs," said Masin. "However, when news hit of the CEO getting $26 million in stock awards, it became clear that the company could afford to pay."

Masin's amendment was to this year's bill relating to state unemployment issues that already included the benefit extension for Northwest mechanics.

"If Northwest, a company that obviously can afford it, didn't pay; it would have been up to other Minnesota businesses to pay through higher unemployment taxes," added Masin.
The bill passed the House on a bipartisan 97 to 34 vote. It now heads to a conference committee with the Senate.
