ST. PAUL - The House Telecommunications Regulation and Infrastructure Division passed legislation today requiring cell phone providers to disclose more billing information to customers. House File 635, authored by the Committee's Vice-Chair Rep. Sandra Masin of Eagan, would specifically require providers to notify consumers whether a requested change in services will extend their contracts.
"It can be frustrating to ask for a minor change in your wireless service only to end up learning after the fact that your contract has been extended without your knowledge," said Masin.
The bill also eliminates hidden charges and requires full descriptions of all government taxes and fees on wireless and land line phone bills. Wireless providers would also have to provide detailed coverage maps, including roam charges, before consumers sign a service contract.
"This common sense legislation lets consumers know exactly what they are paying for on their cell phone bills."
The bill, which carries bipartisan support, now heads to the Labor and Consumer Protection Division. Similar legislation is making its way through the Senate.
