ST. PAUL - State Representative Sandra Masin of Eagan responded to Governor Pawlenty's budget with cautious optimism.
"On the surface, I agree with many of his priorities of better K-12 schools, affordable health care, and a stronger renewable energy economy," Masin said. "I look forward to having positive and honest discussions about these proposals in committee."
Masin stressed that it's too early to make any concrete judgments on the Governor's budget.
"We have a process in the Legislature that will judge whether these, or other proposals will end up in a final budget that everyone can agree on in May."
Rep. Masin, a member of the House Transportation Committee said she did have some questions about his plan to borrow $1.7 billion for transportation projects.
"It does trouble me that the state has already done so much borrowing to pay for transportation," Masin added. "Our transportation system really needs an upgrade, but I think we need to explore other ways to pay for it besides using the state's credit card."
Masin, who serves on the House Education Finance Committee, said she was pleased that the Governor proposed an increase in K-12 education funding.
"While I do have some concerns with the use of one-time money for some initiatives, I'm glad he's addressing our schools' financial needs."
Masin added that the Governor's budget is something the Legislature can really work with.
"We're all on the same page with our goals and I'm hopeful we're going to find the common ground to meet them."
