ST. PAUL - With the legislative session now underway, State Representative Sandra Masin along with other lawmakers, introduced legislation that will permanently reduce property taxes for all Minnesotans. This is the first bill Masin, a first term lawmaker from Eagan, has co-authored.
"Burnsville and Eagan residents have seen school funding continuing to shift from the state on to homeowners," said Masin. "The property tax increases have become excessive. This bill will bring relief to our communities and to all Minnesotans."
The property tax relief bill addresses the recent increases right at the source through:
· Replacing school levies with state aid:
o Equalized Debt Service Levy, which helps schools repay building bonds
o Operating Capital Levy, which pays for books, school repair, maintenance
o Equity Levy, intended to reduce the disparity between highest and lowest revenue school districts.
o Referendum Equalization increase
o Safe school levy: Used for the costs of peace officers, drug prevention programs, gang resistance education, and general school security costs.
· Increasing the homeowners and renters property tax refund: increases both level of income for qualification and the credit amounts.
· Increasing County and Local Government Aid
"Every community needs a different relief plan," Masin added. "This bill addresses our needs and the needs of communities across the state."
