Rep. Norton to Attend Chairman’s Leadership Forum

(ST. PAUL) — Minnesota House Assistant Minority Leader Kim Norton (DFL – Rochester) will be among a small group of legislative leaders being brought together in Grand Rapids, MI this weekend (Sept. 21 - 23) to grapple with some of the most challenging issues facing our country today. The Chairman’s Leadership Forum “Expanding the Scope of Practice for Health and Dental Care for Vulnerable Children” is made possible by a grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.

Representative Norton's work on the Health Care Policy committee, especially as it related to dental access issues was one of the reasons she was offered the invitation to participate in this forum. Minnesota's Dental Therapy degree program is the first of its kind in the country and other states are interested in hearing about its implementation and progress. Dental therapists are the dental equivalent of a nurse practitioner or physician’s assistant, and can place crowns, fill cavities, give local anesthesia and even pull teeth. The use of dental therapists can help states provide more low-income residents with essential dental care and save taxpayer dollars.

“I’m honored and excited to be invited to this forum,” said Rep. Norton. “Minnesota is a national leader in so many areas, with our Dental Therapy degree program among them. I look forward to showing other legislators how this program can be implemented and help people in their states.”

The Chairman’s Leadership Forum is a non-profit 501(c)3 non-partisan education association for all state legislative leadership, committee chairs, vice chairs and ranking minority members, providing education and advanced leadership training skills, including negotiating and consensus building, needed for moving, passing and implementing sound and thoughtful public policy. The meetings are intentionally kept small (15-20 legislators) to allow for maximum input and participation among the attendees.
