BUDGET BUILDS BARRIERS FOR WOMEN

(ST. PAUL) – Two Rochester legislators today called attention to higher costs and fewer opportunities for women in House budget bills. State Representatives Tina Liebling (DFL-Rochester) and Kim Norton (DFL-Rochester) alongside other House colleagues highlighted the budget impact on women at a State Capitol press conference.

Rep. Liebling addressed how the average middle class Minnesota woman is being negatively impacted by the Republican budget. She is paying more out of pocket, has more burdens and obstacles to provide for her family, and is losing opportunities to succeed in the next generation. “Republicans are not talking about the impacts their budget decisions have on women," said Liebling. “When Minnesota women thrive, Minnesota thrives.”

Rep. Norton talked about pocketbook issues including higher education and increased cost of living cuts across all ages. Because women make up a larger part of the senior population, cuts to health and human services and property tax increases also affect their quality of life to a greater degree. “The cuts to K-12 education impact women disproportionately,” said Norton. “Women are worried about the cuts to higher education. Higher tuition can mean college is no longer an option for some families.”

“Women should be concerned,” said Liebling. “This budget builds barriers for women. Republican women legislators should also be watching the impact of their bills on women and families.”

“Equal opportunity is a Minnesota value,” said Norton. “These cuts are simply not wise.”
