HOUSE TAX BILL RAISES PROPERTY TAXES, CUTS ROCHESTER LOCAL CONTROL

(ST. PAUL) – State Representative Kim Norton (DFL-Rochester) responded to today’s omnibus tax bill passed by the state House.

The tax bill raises $1.3 billion in statewide property taxes over the next four years. This includes $378 million on renters and $935 million over the next three years on homeowners, small businesses, and other property owners. “The hidden property taxes in this bill should not fool Minnesotans," explained Norton. “This bill raises taxes on renters and homeowners.

The bill contains a local sales tax provision supported by Norton, the city and the Rochester Chamber of Commerce. “Let the citizens of Rochester decide,” said Rep. Norton. “That’s their choice. This is extending the same sales tax we already have in place. While the amendment to reinstate all the provisions failed today, I’m hopeful cooler heads will prevail in conference committee.” All House Republicans voted no on the provision, including those representing Rochester.

“Increasing property taxes will cost local businesses in Rochester,” said Norton. “Property taxes are the single biggest tax businesses pay. This bill raises taxes. We don’t know how much, but we know they’ll go up. If there’s one thing I’ve heard from folks at home since I’ve been here, it’s that seniors, those on fixed incomes, or in a fragile financial state do not want their property taxes to go up.”
