BUDGET DEFICIT OUTLOOK IS NOW AT $5 BILLION

(ST. PAUL) – State finance officials released a revised economic forecast for Minnesota’s next budget cycle. The state finance commissioner and state economist project Minnesota’s 2012-13 biennial budget deficit at just over $5 billion.

Responding to the updated numbers, Rep. Kim Norton (DFL-Rochester) remarked on the enormity of the challenge facing legislators. “While the $5 billion forecast released today is not as daunting as we thought coming into this year, it remains a dire problem. Minnesota’s economic recovery is on thin ice. We need to tailor our budget carefully; protecting our strengths, making key investments, and growing our way thoughtfully."

Governor Dayton revised his budget after the forecast was released. He restored cuts in long term care, health care, transit, economic development programs and public safety. House Republicans are expected to present their budget proposal within the next two weeks. “Once the legislature has the two budget proposals, we can get to work crafting a prudent two-year budget,” explained Norton. “I am looking forward to taking the best ideas from each party and developing a solution that prepares Minnesota for economic recovery.”

“I am focused on creating jobs,” said Norton. “My priority is to focus on the programs that strengthen our small businesses and communities.”
