ST. PAUL, MN – State Representatives Tina Liebling (DFL – Rochester) and Kim Norton (DFL – Rochester) took the oath of office today at the State Capitol in Saint Paul. Liebling and Norton will face historic economic and fiscal challenges this session. Both legislators say that job creation and a responsible solution to the state’s $6.2 billion budget deficit are front and center this session.
“Right now more than 209,000 Minnesotans are out of work, including almost 3,200 people in Rochester," said Rep. Norton, who is beginning her third term in the House of Representatives. “The unemployment rate in Rochester is well below the state and national averages. But that is little consolation to the thousands of families struggling in our community.”
Liebling agrees, pledging to do everything possible this session to get Minnesota back to work. “We must create and protect jobs in Minnesota,” said Rep. Liebling, who is beginning her fourth term in the House. “The state’s recovery depends on the jobs and opportunities available for all Minnesotans – and that has to be our focus this session.”
Both Liebling and Norton will begin that work on their assigned committees.
Rep. Liebling will serve this session as the DFL lead on the Health and Human Services Reform Committee, and as a member of the Health and Human Services Finance Committee, and the Judiciary Finance and Policy Committee.
Rep. Norton will serve this session on the Education Reform Committee, the Health and Human Services Reform Committee, the Higher Education Policy and Reform Committee, and the Rules and Legislative Administration Committee.
