PHILADELPHIA, PA – State Sen. Steve Murphy (DFL – Red Wing) and state Rep. Kim Norton (DFL – Rochester) were honored Monday in Philadelphia for their nation-leading efforts to improve traffic safety in Minnesota. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration honored Murphy and Norton with “Lifesaver" awards.
“I am honored to have received this award,” said Sen. Murphy. “But I take real satisfaction in knowing that common sense legislation that is now law in our state will continue to save lives on Minnesota roads for years to come.”
Norton and Murphy were recognized for authoring and successfully passing primary seat belt legislation in 2009. The two Minnesota legislators were among 19 individuals to be recognized for their exemplary achievements in promoting highway safety. Among the honorees were New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson and Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle.
“Reducing traffic fatalities on roads in Minnesota and nationwide requires the cooperative, forward-thinking efforts of leaders in every state,” said Rep. Norton. “Working together we can enact simple solutions that dramatically improve safety behind the wheel, and prevent unnecessary deaths.”
During the three-day 28th Annual Lifesavers conference in Philadelphia, hundreds of people attended workshops ranging from child passenger safety and occupant protection, to impaired driving and new vehicle safety technology. “Lifesavers” is an independent group dedicated to reducing transportation related deaths.
