ST. PAUL, MN – State lawmakers passed a jobs-targeted bonding bill (HF2700) today at the State Capitol with bipartisan support. The bill, carefully crafted throughout months of careful work, strategically targets high-priority shovel-ready projects capable of putting Minnesotans to work and producing long-term economic benefits.
This year’s bonding bill is the product of thoughtful, bipartisan cooperation focused on needed economic development. It includes $35 million of direct investments in Rochester infrastructure that will give a boost to the local and regional economies. Those infrastructure investments include:
• $28 million for the Mayo Civic Center expansion
• $3.2 million to complete the Rochester Community and Technical College (RCTC) Workforce Center co-location
• $4 million for Phase II of the Rochester National Volleyball Center
“In addition to the short-term construction jobs these projects will create, these investments will have a lasting impact on Rochester’s long-term economic recovery," Norton said.
“Finally finishing needed improvements at the Mayo Civic Center and the Volleyball Center will attract more visitors to Rochester, bringing more dollars into our local hotels, restaurants, and other area businesses. These are smart investments today that will yield economic benefits for years to come.”
Along with the bonding bill, the House is looking at several initiatives to create jobs and support small businesses, including a bill to improve access to credit, reduce costly regulations and mandates, broaden access to technology, and help reduce energy costs.
HF2700 will now go to conference committee before being sent to Governor Tim Pawlenty for final approval.
